How to start?

  • How do you start an application letter?
  • What is the best layout for this letter?
  • What should I include in my application form?
  • Are there letter examples that I can use?

These questions and much more can all be found on applicationformexample.com and of course our motivational letter examples are available on this website for you.

You have already taken the first step in the right direction, searching for help to write the best motivation or cover letter for getting your goal, your preferred job.
You can use our example, rebuild it for own use. We will explain how.

First off all, do research about the company, the employees and competition, so that you are familiar with the company, their activities and the market in which they are doing business. If you fail to do this, they can discover that you didn’t do some research about them, with the consequence that they think that you are not greedy enough.

It’s a little effort to do some research on the internet about the company and the information you will find, will help you a lot in writing your motivation letter and on top, it will help you when they will invite you for a job interview.
In the example below, we used a real company, to make it as realistic as possible.

Layout

The layout of our motivation letter examples are reasonably simple.
It is not your intention that your (hopefully) future employer will receive an over-motivated cover letter.

The golden rule: Keep your motivation letter to the point and simple.

In the example motivation letter, you can see

  • That we first use a default headline, such as in a regular letter
  • Write at the top left, your name and address
  • After some white rules, the contact person and the address of the company
  • Then you can start with your motivation
  • Write down why you want to work within this company and nowhere else
  • Do not forget, as you can see in the example, the date and place of writing

Structure

A motivation letter has a fixed structure, like most articles, blog posts or other written sources. Our letter clearly shows that there are three different motivation letter construction parts to be dealt with. The standard paragraphs used in almost any written letter.
We also advise you to use these components also, so that you can work structured. In this way, the person who will read your motivation letter can quickly determine whether or not you fit for the job.

The three different parts are:

  • The introduction
  • The middle
  • The final

Below we have briefly described what you should mention in each part of your application form.

The introduction

One thing is very important when writing the introduction of your motivation letter.
Start your cover letter with power! In our example, you will see that the introduction is immediately to-the-point.

Please follow the advice, as company managers or Human Resource Managers often have very little time to read these motivation letters. So keep this in mind, it will make your own letter preferably even better than the rest.
In the introduction of the motivation letter, you need to explain why you want this job, as well you need to explain your motivation, explaining not only why you want that job, but also why are the right person for the job. End the introduction part carefully, so that you can seamlessly switch to the center part.

The middle

This part of the motivation letter serves to describe your personality characteristics and experiences that relate to the job you are applying for. In the motivation letter example you can see that these competencies and experiences are described briefly and clear. Keep in mind that you want to get the attention of the people you are writing to, so that they will invite you for a job interview. So give all your competencies and experiences in your motivation letter! Keep them interested in you.

The final

What should be mentioned in the final part? In this part, you will find a brief summary and conclusion why you would like to be invited for this job and why you are the right person. Also refer to the attachments. An attachment may include your resume.

Advise

  • Always keep your language in business style.
Do not use informal language. Do not overdo this with cliché expressions.
  • Use your own words.
Every company expects a motivation letter filled wiht your own words and competencies. Companies want to see an original motivation letter, not a classically modified letter. Beware that you try, to keep the apearence as to the point as possible.
  • Language and grammar errors are not allowed.
Motivation letters with errors are immediately discarded. Use a good spell checking tool to prevent these errors.
  • Be to-the-point:
Short sentences and active verbs can make a big difference.
  • Do not just copy a motivation letter example. If you are going to use an example letter, please use your own words and change as much as possible to make it your own.
  • The length of our motivation letter example is one page.
Try to limit your motivation letter to an A4 format.

Before writing

You already know why you would like to go to this business or this education, but have you thought about why they need you? Find out what your qualities are. Make a list of your strengths. Examples of strengths are:

– adaptability
– Assertiveness
– Collegiality
– Creativity
– Discipline
– Perseverance
– Empathy
– Energetic
– Human knowledge
– Observative
– Entrepreneur
– Practical
– Socially set
– Curiosity
– Independence

And so on. Of course, do not just make a list of all your positive features. These are the things that you can apply during your profession or study. Human knowledge does not have so much added value when you study autotechnics, and energetic are not for a law study.

Sender information

At the top of your letter, even when it comes to online submission, first state your own information. The top line is your full name. Below you will find your home address and postal code, and below your e-mail address and phone number.

Business information

Under your own information you will find the same information about the company where you send your application form. Sometimes it is chosen to add these two columns to another, for a different type of layout. Your own data will be put in the top right corner.

Subject

Describe as short and powerful as possible. For example, “Internship nursery”, or who wants to make it more fun, “Why applied psychology and I match”.

Preamble

You open your application form. If you do not know who will read the letter, write “Dear Sir / Madam”. Do you know who will get the letter? Then state the name of this person. “Dear Jan”.

Introduction

In the first sentence, it must always be clear what you are talking about, you are interested in a company or education. Hereafter you will briefly describe what you are so appealing about this profession or training. It is good to address this personally. For example, write a short anecdote that you have been organizing things well from the beginning, or for a long time having a poster with the anatomy of man in your room. A personal introduction distinguishes you from other candidates. Hereafter you will tell you how this interest has grown, and why you would like to make it your profession or training.

Middle

In the middle paragraph (or paragraphs) you indicate your qualities. You name your personal qualities that you can use well in this field, for example, that you are a very socially-oriented person. Do you write the application form to a degree program? So please indicate what you would like to learn. A training is only suitable for people who do not know anything about the subject. Tell us what you’re so interested in and what you want to know more about. Also try to explain what you want to know more about it. You can also appoint your points to learn at an internship. When applying for a job you don’t mention your points to learn.

However, it is good to mention one weakness of yourself, preferably one that will not be in the way of work and actually not so relevant. Do this purely to indicate that you have self-knowledge, each one of us has a bad feature.

Closure

You close your letter with a positive note. A few examples for the closing:

  • “I think your training fits very well for me. I would like to hear if and when I could talk about my motivation”
  • “I think we can mean a lot to each other. I would like to continue my motivation for this job in a personal conversation.
  • I’d love to hear when I could come over for a conversation. “

Make sure you never end the letter completely. Of course, you want them to contact you. Let this also know.

Signature

You sign your letter with “Sincerely,” and your own name below.
