Resume

Looking for a resume example? If you are applying for a job, you are often asked to send a motivation letter with a resume.

In your resume you tell the emplyer which experience you have build up so far. The company you want to work for, can easily and quickly see if you are a fit for the job. The importance of a good resume is clear: it makes the difference between being invited or not being invited for a job interview.

The resume gives the first impression

Usually you are not the only one applying for a particular job. There are sometimes hundreds of applicants responding on popular vacancies. You can imagine that a company does not always have the time to review all those application forms and resumes. Therefore, often the resume is the first filtering. With a resume you make your first impression and you only make it once. A first selection of interesting candidates is made on resume basis. If yours gives the impression that your experience does not match the job, your application will not be read and you will not be invited for a job interview. This again shows the importance of a good resume.

With a resume you make your first impression and you only make it once!

Pay attention to your resume

Of course, your letter is very important, but pay more attention to your resume. The chances for being invited for a job interview are based on your resume, rather than based on your motivation letter. Your resume must look very good and must distinguish among many other candidates. It’s not only important that you have the right experience, but also that your resume has a nice layout and that there are no mistakes. A messy resume does not make a good first impression and you will soon be rejected.

Be relevant

The mistake which often is made, is to make a resume once and then send it to together with each application. This, of course can work, but you can run into the problem or chance that you may mention experiences which are not relevant to the job you are applying for. Therefore, review your resume again before each application and see if you can add and rewrite it, to let it be a better match for the job you are currently applying for. It would be a shame of course, if you have the required experience, but you fail to mention them on your resume. Give the most important experience and skills some extra attention. Make sure they notice your skills.

Make your resume neat and clear

A resume must look neat and must not contain any errors. A resume that looks messy at first glance is put aside by the new company. It’s nice if you choose an original layout. It is important that you do not overdo it and that the layout fits the job you are applying for. When applying for a creative job, a creative resume fits, but when applying at very formal companies you better choose a classical style. You could also choose a resume and motivation on video, but not every company is waiting for that kind of applications. After all, they have to make more effort to view the resume. Therefore, the tip would be to always send your normal written resume.

Please provide the correct information

It’s convenient for a company, if you put the usual parts of a resume in an usual order, so that they can easily scan and find information quickly. In your resume you must at least mention your personalities, work experiences, skills and completed education.

Resume sections

Your resume, is often the first to be considered when applying for a job. If your resume is not correct, then the corresponding application letter will not be read in many cases.

It is therefore very important to have a good resume with a good resume structure. A resume consists of a number of fixed components. The exact content and order may vary slightly depending on the source that gives the advice.

Resume structure

In the personal information section, you will enter your name and contact details. You can also mention what kind of job you are interested in. The work experience, is perhaps the most important part. Put the most recent working experience at the top and go back in time, with your first working experience at the bottom of the list. Mention only relevant work experiences.
Because it is not always clear on job title, what kind of job it is, it’s smart to add a brief description of your work.
With a skills list you will show what your specializations are, for example with which computer programs you can work. Mention the education list, the same way as your work experience, with the last-followed education at the top. Mention the official name of the education and the school or university. You can also mention relevant courses here, that you have followed. Finally, add which languages you speak and if you have a driver’s license, if applicable.

Invest in a good resume

Creating a good resume with the right structure is quite a challenge. First, you need to know what information should be in your resume and then you should mention it clearly and structured.
However, investing time in setting up your resume is worth the effort, because likely that you are invited for a job interview when sending a well written resume.

Personal Data

Your personal information must be at the top of your resume. The opinions about what information should be right here differ, but please state your full name and use this name consistently.
Your address details, mention the phone number they can call (just one), your e-mail address and your date of birth. You can supplement this information with your place of birth, marital status, nationality and gender.
The personal information is a summary. If you want to tell something about your personality or ambitions, then you can add an additional short personal profile like a small elevator pitch.

Education and work experience

This is the core of your resume. Based on your education and work experience, it is determined whether your profile matches the job requirements. For both your education and your work experience, you should report it in reverse order, so with the most recent educations and experiences at the top of the summary. You start with a “Education” heading. Below are the exact names of the education that you have followed, which school, graduate school, academy or university you have done in which period of time. Also state whether you have obtained a certificate. After the education, the headline ‘Professional work experience’ follows. Here you will tell which companies you have worked for and in with what kind of responsibility. Give a brief description of your responsibilities and tasks. So the reader of your application form en resume will know exactly what you have done in the past.

Languages

For the languages you speak you can create a separate header on your resume. Sometimes, however, the languages are also listed under the competences or skills. You only need to add this header if you manage at least 1 foreign language, fairly well in speaking and writing. Mention all the foreign languages you speak and indicate the level of your oral and written skills. You can think of ‘excellent’, ‘good’ or ‘reasonable’.

Competences and other skills

Then there is the Skills or Competences header together with the education list.
Here you can list what your strong characteristics are and for example which software applications you are familiar with, the so called technical skills. This information should of course be relevant for the job you are applying for.

Other information

If you want to share information that you can not paste anywhere else, you can make a header called ‘Others’. Here, for example, you can give relevant hobbies or other activities that you consider important to mention. preferable is, to not mention these kind of experiences unless they are relevant and important enough.

Do not deviate too much

There is a reason that there is a more or less a fixed resume structure. This way the reader can quickly find all the information on your resume. Of course there is room to be creative with your resume, but make sure you list the usual parts in the correct order.
